Summer 2010 Study Abroad in England

Cross-Cultural Academy in Health Care

May 14 – June 17, 2010

Four Different 5-week Classes

 

5-week Classes:

Four health-related courses are being offered as part of the University of Evansville's five-week 2010 Summer School at Harlaxton College in England. Classes meet collectively for group information and individually to study each specific field of interest. Visits are planned to modern health care facilities and relevant historical sites. Other activities include group discussion with British citizens concerning the consumer's view of the British health care system. Students can register for one or two of the following courses.

The British and U.S. Health Care Systems: A Comparative Study, HSA 499/599

3 hours undergraduate or graduate credit

This course focuses on a comparison of the health care systems in Great Britain and the United States. It also examines the origin and current status of the British health care. Visits are planned to modern health care facilities and historical sites in Leicester, Nottingham, Grantham, Lincoln and London. Other activities include group discussions with British citizens concerning the consumer’s view on the British health care system. British health care professionals will visit and discuss their role in the National Health Service. This class may be taken alone or in conjunction with one of the other three health related classes. All majors are welcome.  No prerequisites.


Nursing and Health Professions: A Cultural Experience, NURS 395

This study abroad experience will explore the historical, social, ethical, legal and cultural components of nursing and other health care professionals in Great Britain. The National Health Service, health care issues, health promotion programs, community and hospital-based practices will be studied and discussed during this course. British health care providers and British citizens will discuss and answer questions regarding their health care system. Study tours are planned to relevant historical sites, modern health care facilities and nursing and medical museums. The tentative schedule includes visits to London, Eyam, Lincoln, Nottingham, Leicester and Grantham. Opportunities to shadow health care professionals enable the students to experience the British health care system. All majors welcome. No prerequisite.


Cardiac Rehabilitation: An International Perspective, EXSS 488

3 hours undergraduate credit

This course utilizes a comparative approach to study the design, implementation, and administration of a multidimensional cardiac rehabilitation program in the American and British systems. In addition, historical roots of medical cardiac rehabilitation, and public health are explored. Prerequisites: EXSS 112 and 113 or consent of instructor.

 

Ethics and Jurisprudence in Health Care, HSA 406/506

3 hours undergraduate or graduate credit

Discusses ethical and legal issues in health care and their application to the health care organization, administrator, staff, employees and patients. Topics include issues at the end of life, distribution of health care, privacy and regulatory issues. Visits are planned to modern health care facilities and historical sites in Leicester, Nottingham, Grantham and Lincoln.  This class may be taken alone or in conjunction with one of the other three health related classes. All majors are welcome.  No prerequisites.

 

Schedule

The five-week classes meet for two hours each day Monday through Thursday, with travel opportunities during the three-day weekends. Students will have the opportunity to travel on college-sponsored trips as well as individual travel. The second week of class will be devoted to field trips with the ten-day health services administration class.
There are no specific prerequisites for these courses and all majors are welcome. Registration for the 5-week classes is processed by the Study Abroad Office. An application can be downloaded here.


Cost for 5-week Class

Tentative Costs Payable to University of Evansville are due by April 20, 2010. (Final costs will be confirmed in March 2010.)

Estimated comprehensive undergraduate cost: $3,300 (includes three hours of undergraduate tuition, housing, meals, student activity fee, local Harlaxton shuttle fee, health and wellness fee, and airport pick-up at London Heathrow for passengers landing on May 15th by 10:00 am.) The total for graduate students is estimated to be $4,125. Deposit of $250 is due at the time of application.

Additional Expenses:  Airfare, airport return and personal expenses.
