10-day Class in Health Services Administration
May 23 – June 1, 2008
The 10-day course focuses on a comparison of health care systems in Great Britain and the United States. Both historical and modern health care sites are visited. The tentative schedule includes visits to Nottingham, Lincoln, Eyam, Leicester and Grantham. The origin of health care systems will be studied during visits to a hospital, hospice, selected almshouses and cathedrals. Group discussions with British citizens concerning the consumer’s view of the British health care system are also scheduled.
Headquarters
for the class is Harlaxton Manor, a 101-room Victorian
dwelling situated on 55 acres in the picturesque English Midlands.
Harlaxton Manor is owned by the University of Evansville and maintained
for educational purposes as Harlaxton College.
You may audit the course or receive three hours of graduate or
undergraduate credit in health services administration. The 10-day class is
designed for both practicing health care professionals and full-time
students. A limited number of spaces are available for guests that may
accompany those registered for the course.
Credit:
This course provides three hours of health services administration
undergraduate or graduate credit for HSA 499 or HSA 599. The University of Evansville is a member of the North Central
Association of Colleges and Schools. Students should check with their
home school for course approval and course transfer information.
Travel to England for 10-Day Class:
Although you are responsible for purchasing your own ticket, the trip
coordinator will provide you with a group flight option in early 2008.
The group flight will depart Evansville on Friday afternoon, May 23,
2008 and arrive in London Saturday morning. The group will be met at
the airport and provided transportation to Harlaxton Manor, which is
approximately 110 miles north of London. You may wish to travel
independently and provide your own transportation. In past years many
people have flown to England early and independently taken a train to
Harlaxton. We will provide you with detailed instructions if you chose
to travel independently.
Cost of 10-Day Class:
The final summer tuition cost will established in early 2008.

*The course fee includes room and all meals while at Harlaxton College,
entrance fees to medical museums and cathedrals,
transportation from London airport to Harlaxton, and all field trips.
Additional expenses include airfare,
personal sightseeing and meals in London, and personal expenses.
Applications and a nonrefundable deposit of $500 is due before January 28, 2008. Later applications will be accepted if space is still available. The remainder of the cost is due on March 17, 2008. Students are admitted to the class on a rolling basis and the 10-day class is limited to 14 students, plus a limited number of guests accompanying those registered for the class.
Instructor:
Bill Stroube is Professor and director of the health services
administration graduate and undergraduate programs at the University of
Evansville. He has published in the areas of international health care
issues, health care marketing and health care ethics. Before joining
the UE faculty in 1998, he spent twelve years in management positions
in the pharmaceutical industry and eight years at the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration in Washington, D.C. He has extensive experience
leading student groups through the British health care system, having
taught nine summer classes in England since 2000.
